Pasture Principles - a practical guide to pasture management
9-10 April 2018, Clare
11-12 April 2018, Millicent
16-17 April 2018, Barossa
Pasture management is the fundamental skill that determines the financial performance of pasture based grazing systems. Managers that exhibit a high degree of pasture management skill are far more profitable than those with less developed skills. The aim of Pasture Principles is to provide producers with a set of guiding principles that will allow them to manage confidently regardless of the season, situation or system.
Pasture Principles delivery consists of a two day workshop which covers the theory of grazing, understanding the language and key principles. Following the workshop, participants engage in a 12 month program consisting of six group based, on-farm coaching sessions that puts the theory into practice and develops the key skills associated with pasture management.
“Participation in the Pasture Principles course has been very valuable for our business in regard to understanding pasture growth and how this is influenced by prevailing climatic conditions. The on-farm demonstration of leaf emergence rates, pasture growth rates, and the pasture/animal interface has been very beneficial. Learning how to apply the key principles in a commercial grazing business through the on-farm coaching sessions has allowed for a robust level of skill development and higher levels of adoption. The competency of course delivery has also impressed us.”
2017 South Australian Pasture Principles Participant
“Pasture Principles has changed the way we think about our grazing business. The framework is easy to understand and adopt and will support you into stocking rate decisions that drive profit in your operation. You will learn how to accurately measure and forecast pasture growth and animal requirements. This greatly assists with predicting pasture production over Spring and being able to develop a plan to utilise this additional dry matter production in a profitable manner. What we learnt allowed us to more than double our numbers on one farm over the Spring of 2017. I now can sleep better knowing there’s some science behind previous gut feel in regard to grazing management decisions. Pasture Principles coach Simon Vogt is also an engaging presenter and having both a financial and agricultural background gives him a practical toolbox of knowledge to drive skill development in grazing businesses. Don’t miss the opportunity to join one of the 2018 Pasture Principles groups…it will help set you and your team up for grazing management success!”
